Overview
Mushrooms don't photosynthesise, so it's a common myth that they grow in total darkness. In reality, most gourmet and medicinal species need a burst of light to trigger fruiting — it tells the mycelium where the open air is, and it shapes how caps and stems form. Too little light gives you long, spindly stems and tiny caps; the right amount gives compact, well-formed fruit.
This calculator is built for home cultivators, market growers and grow-tent hobbyists who want to stop guessing. Instead of "just put it near a window," it tells you the target intensity for your species, the total lumens your growing area needs, a realistic fixture wattage, the ideal colour temperature and the daily light cycle to run.
How it works
- Pick your mushroom type — each species has its own light target loaded from cultivation data.
- Enter the length and width of your growing surface in centimetres (the footprint of your tub, tray or shelf).
- Enter the mounting height of the light above the substrate — higher lights spread and lose more light, so this adjusts the estimate.
- Choose your light source so wattage is matched to that technology's efficiency.
- Press Calculate light needs to see the recommended lumens, wattage, colour temperature and light cycle. Press Reset to start over.
Formula explanation
The tool converts a species' target illuminance into the real light output your fixture must produce, then accounts for practical losses rather than assuming an ideal setup.
Area (m²) = (Length cm × Width cm) ÷ 10,000
Lumens = (Target Lux × Area) ÷ (CU × LLF)CU = coefficient of utilisation (0.6–0.8, based on mounting height — how much light actually lands on the area). LLF = light loss factor (0.8, for dust and LED/lamp dimming over time).
Watts = Lumens ÷ Efficacy (lm/W of your light source)Rounded up to the next whole watt, since fixtures are sold in whole watts.
kWh / month = (Recommended Watts × Hours per day × 30) ÷ 1,000Based on the rounded wattage above, so the figures match the fixture you would actually buy.
Target lux values are species-specific: light-hungry types like oyster sit around 1,500 lux, while Agaricus (button) mushrooms need almost none and will fruit under ambient room light.
Practical benefits
- Buy the right light once. Know the lumens and wattage before you shop, instead of over- or under-buying a grow light.
- Better-looking flushes. Correct intensity means compact caps and short stems — not the pale, leggy fruit that comes from too little light.
- Lower running costs. The energy estimate shows what your setup actually costs to run each month.
- Species-aware. One tub of enoki and one shelf of oysters need very different light — the tool accounts for that automatically.
- Repeatable results. Set a timer to the recommended light cycle and get consistent fruiting batch after batch.
Frequently asked questions
Not to grow the mycelium — colonisation happens in the dark. But most species need light to fruit. Light signals the mycelium that it has reached open air and triggers pinning, so the mushrooms form where you want them and grow with proper shape.
Fruiting is triggered mainly by blue light, so a cool "daylight" white around 6,000–6,500K works well and is cheap. A basic daylight LED shop light or bulb is ideal — you don't need an expensive plant "grow light" with a purple spectrum.
Most gourmet species do well on about 12 hours on / 12 hours off during fruiting — a simple plug timer handles this. It's the daily light/dark cycle that matters, not constant light, so leaving a light on 24/7 gives no benefit and just wastes energy.
Indirect daylight from a window is often enough for low-demand species. Avoid direct sun, which dries out and overheats the substrate. If your space is dim or you want consistent year-round results, a timed daylight LED sized by this calculator is more reliable.
