Overview

Biological Efficiency (BE) is the single most important yield metric in mushroom cultivation. It tells you how much fresh mushroom you produced relative to the amount of dry substrate you started with — expressed as a percentage. A BE of 100% means you harvested 1 kg of fresh mushrooms from every 1 kg of dry substrate.

This calculator is built for hobby growers, market farmers, teaching labs, and commercial producers who want an honest, real-world reading of their grow performance. Instead of guessing, you get a clear BE% score, a species-specific benchmark, and a full breakdown so you can compare batches, dial in your recipe, and spot underperforming substrates before they cost you a season.

How It Works

  1. Select your mushroom species so the tool can benchmark your result against realistic yields.
  2. Pick a weight unit (g, kg, or lb) and use it consistently for every field.
  3. Enter the total fresh harvest — add up every flush picked from the same block or bag.
  4. Choose how you measured your substrate: wet weight + moisture %, or dry weight directly.
  5. Click Calculate BE% to see your efficiency score, benchmark rating, and detailed breakdown.

Formula Explanation

Biological Efficiency compares fresh yield to dry substrate mass:

BE (%) = Fresh Mushroom Weight Dry Substrate Weight × 100

If you only know the wet (hydrated) substrate weight, the dry mass is derived first:

Dry Weight = Wet Weight × (1 − Moisture% ÷ 100)
Example: 2,500 g wet at 65% moisture = 875 g dry.

Using dry substrate weight is what makes BE meaningful and comparable — water content varies from batch to batch, so measuring against wet weight would hide the true conversion your mycelium achieved.

Practical Benefits

  • Compare recipes objectively: Test straw vs. supplemented sawdust and let BE% show which actually pays off.
  • Cost your crop: Knowing yield per kg of dry substrate lets you price product and forecast revenue accurately.
  • Catch problems early: A sudden BE drop flags contamination, poor spawn, or bad hydration before you scale it up.
  • Optimize supplementation: Measure the real return of bran, gypsum, or nutrient additions instead of guessing.
  • Benchmark against the field: See whether your grow is below average, solid, or genuinely commercial-grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends heavily on species. For oyster mushrooms, 75–100% is respectable and 100%+ is strong. Shiitake commonly lands around 75–125%, while slower medicinal species like reishi are far lower (often 30–60%). Rather than chasing one universal number, compare your result to the benchmark this tool shows for your chosen species.
Always dry weight for the actual BE calculation. Because moisture varies between batches, measuring against wet weight would inflate or deflate your score inconsistently. If you only weighed your substrate wet, enter that weight plus your moisture percentage and the calculator converts it to dry mass automatically.
Add up the fresh weight of all flushes harvested from the same block or bag. BE is a cumulative, whole-cycle metric. If you only count the first flush, you'll seriously understate the true efficiency of your substrate — most blocks give meaningful second and even third flushes.
No, it's completely normal. Fresh mushrooms are roughly 90% water, so their fresh weight can easily exceed the dry substrate mass. A BE above 100% simply means you harvested more fresh mushroom weight than the dry weight of substrate you started with — a sign of a healthy, well-run grow.

This calculator provides estimates for educational and planning purposes only. Actual mushroom yields depend on strain, substrate quality, environmental conditions, and cultivation technique, and results may vary.
