Mushroom Production Schedule Calculator
Plan every stage of your grow — from inoculation to final flush — with realistic timing and yield estimates based on species, spawn rate, and growing conditions.
Overview
The Mushroom Production Schedule Calculator turns a single inoculation date into a complete, realistic grow timeline. Instead of guessing when your blocks will finish colonizing or when to expect each flush, you get concrete dates for every milestone plus an estimated harvest weight for the whole cycle.
It is built for small commercial growers, market gardeners, teaching farms, and serious hobbyists who need to coordinate spawning batches, fruiting-room capacity, and harvest labour. By modelling species behaviour, spawn rate, and temperature together, it helps you stagger production and avoid the classic problems of everything fruiting at once — or nothing being ready when you need it.
How It Works
- Pick your mushroom species — each one loads realistic default durations for colonization, pinning, fruiting, and flush recovery.
- Enter your inoculation date — the day spawn meets substrate.
- Add the number of blocks, the weight per block, and the moisture content so yield can be estimated on a dry-substrate basis.
- Set your spawn rate and growing temperature — both adjust how fast the culture moves through each stage.
- Choose how many flushes to plan for, then press Calculate schedule.
You get a dated milestone timeline, a per-flush yield breakdown, and the total production cycle length. Editing any field clears the results so you never read a stale schedule; press Reset to return every field to its default.
Formula Explanation
Stage durations start from species-typical baselines and are adjusted for your actual growing conditions:
Colonization days = Base days × Temp factor × Spawn factorSpawn factor = √(10 ÷ Spawn rate %) (clamped to 0.6–1.8)Temp factor = 1.00 optimal · 1.25 cooler · 0.90 warmer
Milestone dates then chain forward from the inoculation date:
Colonization complete = Start + Colonization daysFirst pins = Colonization complete + Pinning daysFlush 1 harvest = First pins + Fruiting daysFlush n harvest = Flush 1 + (n − 1) × Rest gap
Yield uses biological efficiency (BE) — the standard measure of fresh mushrooms produced per unit of dry substrate:
Dry substrate = Blocks × Weight × (1 − Moisture ÷ 100)Total fresh yield = Dry substrate × BE ÷ 100Per-flush yield = Total × flush share (front-loaded)
Practical Benefits
- Staggered planting: see exactly when a batch frees up fruiting space so you can time the next inoculation.
- Labour planning: know harvest dates in advance to line up staff, packaging, and delivery runs.
- Sales forecasting: estimate how much product a batch will yield before committing to a market stall or wholesale order.
- Fewer surprises: see how a cool room or a low spawn rate pushes your timeline back, before it costs you a harvest window.
- Teaching and record-keeping: a clean, dated plan for classes, grant reports, or your own grow logs.
Frequently Asked Questions
No — they are realistic estimates based on species-typical timing and the conditions you enter. Real grows vary with strain, substrate recipe, humidity, CO₂ levels, and contamination. Treat the schedule as a planning baseline and tighten it using your own batch records.
A higher spawn rate spreads more colonized points through the substrate, so the block runs through faster and resists contamination better. The calculator shortens the colonization stage as the rate rises above the 10% baseline and lengthens it below that, with the effect tapering off at the extremes rather than scaling without limit.
It uses biological efficiency (BE) — fresh mushroom weight as a percentage of dry substrate weight. The tool converts your wet block weight to dry weight using the moisture figure, applies a species-typical BE, then splits the result across flushes with the first flush taking the largest share.
Some species reliably give only one or two worthwhile flushes — Reishi and King Oyster among them — while oysters can carry three or four. If you plan more flushes than a species typically supports, the calculator still schedules them but flags it, so you can judge whether those later, smaller harvests justify the shelf space and time.
Disclaimer
This calculator provides general planning estimates for educational purposes only. Actual colonization times, fruiting dates, and yields depend on strain, substrate formulation, sterilization, environmental control, and contamination, and will differ from these figures. It is not agronomic, financial, or food-safety advice. Always follow proper cultivation and food-handling practice, correctly identify anything you intend to eat, and verify results against your own records before making commercial decisions.
