Overview

The Mushroom Break-even Calculator tells you the exact point where a grow cycle stops losing money and starts making it. Instead of guessing whether your oyster, shiitake, or lion's mane operation is profitable, you get three concrete break-even numbers: the lowest price per pound you can accept, the pounds you must actually sell, and the number of bags you need to start.

It's built for hobbyists going semi-commercial, market growers pricing for a farmers' market or restaurant account, and small fruiting-room operations planning their next expansion. Because it accounts for the pounds you pay to grow but never sell — the bags lost to contamination — it reflects what actually happens on a real farm, not a spreadsheet's best-case scenario.

How It Works

  1. Enter your fixed costs. These stay roughly the same no matter how many bags you run this cycle — rent, utilities, the cycle's share of equipment, and labor.
  2. Enter per-bag costs and production. Substrate, spawn, and supplies are charged on every bag you make. Add your bag count, realistic yield per good bag, and your contamination rate.
  3. Enter your selling price per pound — use your real wholesale or retail price, not a hopeful one.
  4. Click Calculate break-even. You'll see your projected profit or loss plus a full cost breakdown.
  5. Read your three break-even figures and the margin-of-safety line to see how much room you have before the cycle slips into a loss.

Formula Explanation

The calculator works in plain steps. Every bag you pay for counts as a cost — but only surviving bags earn revenue.

Total cost = Fixed costs + (Bags × Per-bag cost)
Sellable yield = Bags × (1 − Contamination rate) × Yield per bag
Break-even price / lb = Total cost ÷ Sellable yield
Break-even volume (lbs) = Total cost ÷ Your selling price
Bags to break even = Fixed costs ÷ Contribution per bag,
where Contribution per bag = (Yield × Survival rate × Price) − Per-bag cost

Contribution per bag is what a single bag adds toward paying off your fixed costs after its own growing cost is covered. If it's zero or negative, no volume can make the cycle profitable at that price — the calculator flags this for you.

Practical Benefits

  • Price with confidence. Know the floor price that covers costs before you quote a chef or set a market sign.
  • Decide when to scale. See whether adding 50 more bags moves you further past break-even or just adds risk.
  • Catch unprofitable products early. A variety with low yield or high contamination shows up as a negative contribution per bag.
  • Negotiate wholesale deals. Compare a bulk offer against your break-even price so you never sell below cost.
  • Plan realistic budgets. Contamination losses are built in, so your projections match what leaves the fruiting room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fixed costs stay about the same whether you run 50 bags or 150 — rent, utilities, labor, and equipment share. Per-bag costs scale directly with production: substrate, spawn, and supplies. Separating them is what lets the calculator find your true break-even point.

You pay for substrate, spawn, and supplies on every bag — including the ones that fail. But contaminated bags produce nothing to sell. Ignoring this makes any projection too optimistic. Small operations often see 10–20% losses; entering your real rate keeps the numbers honest.

For a typical 5 lb oyster block, many growers harvest around 1 to 1.5 lb of sellable mushrooms across the first strong flushes — roughly a 20–30% biological efficiency in practice. Later flushes add less and less. Use the total you reliably sell from a good bag, not a single record harvest.

Three levers move it the most: cut contamination (better sterile technique lifts sellable yield with no extra cost), raise yield per bag (substrate recipe, fresh spawn, good conditions), and spread fixed costs over more bags. Raising price helps too, but only if your market supports it.
