Mushroom ROI Calculator
Estimate the real profit and return on investment of a mushroom grow cycle after accounting for bag costs, contamination losses, yield, and overheads.
Overview
The Mushroom ROI Calculator helps growers work out whether a batch of mushrooms will actually make money before they commit spawn, substrate, and time to it. Instead of guessing from a single ideal-case number, it models a full grow cycle the way a real operation experiences it — including the bags that fail to contamination, the overheads that eat into margins, and the difference between what a bag could yield and what it typically does.
It is built for small commercial cultivators, market growers, and serious hobbyists producing oyster, shiitake, lion's mane, or similar species. If you are pricing a new crop, comparing substrate suppliers, or deciding how many bags to run, this tool turns your assumptions into a clear profit, ROI, and break-even figure you can act on.
How It Works
- Pick your currency so every money figure displays in the right symbol and number format.
- Enter how many grow bags or blocks you plan to run in the cycle.
- Add the all-in cost per bag — spawn, substrate, the bag itself, and prep labour bundled together.
- Enter the realistic yield per productive bag in kilograms, summed across all flushes.
- Set your contamination or failure rate so lost bags are subtracted from output but still counted as cost.
- Add your selling price per kilogram and any fixed overheads for the cycle, then press Calculate ROI.
Your results appear directly below the buttons. Press Reset to clear every field and start a new scenario.
Formula Explanation
The calculator works through the numbers in the same order a grower would:
Failed bags are removed from yield but still charged to investment — you pay for spawn and substrate whether or not a bag fruits. Bag counts are kept whole because you cannot run a fraction of a bag. That is what keeps the result grounded in real-world outcomes rather than a perfect harvest.
Practical Benefits
- Price with confidence: the break-even figure tells you the lowest price per kg that still covers your costs.
- Stress-test contamination: raise the failure rate and watch how quickly thin margins turn into losses.
- Compare suppliers and substrates: change the cost per bag or yield to see which recipe actually pays off.
- Scale sensibly: model 50 bags versus 500 before spending on space, spawn, or labour.
- Pitch and plan: produce clear profit and ROI numbers for a business plan, loan, or partner conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Use a realistic figure across all flushes, not a best-case single flush. For oyster mushrooms on a 2–3 kg substrate bag, 0.5–1.0 kg total is common for well-run setups. If you track biological efficiency, multiply your dry substrate weight per bag by your BE% to estimate fresh yield.
Because you buy spawn, substrate, and bags for every unit you inoculate, contaminated bags spend money without producing mushrooms. Counting them as cost but not yield is exactly why the calculator's profit and ROI reflect real conditions instead of an ideal harvest.
Many small growers see 10–20% losses, higher when learning or working in a less controlled space, and lower with good sterile technique and a clean grow room. Enter your own tracked figure if you have one; otherwise start around 15% and adjust as you gather data.
Bag-level prep labour can be folded into the cost per bag, while broader overheads — rent, electricity, water, and salaried time — belong in the fixed costs field. Including both gives a truer net profit than counting only spawn and substrate.
