Mushroom Master’s Mix Calculator

Work out the exact hardwood sawdust, soybean hulls, and water needed to hydrate a Master’s Mix batch to your target moisture — per block and for the whole run.

Enter a whole number of blocks (1–2000). How many finished blocks you plan to fill.
lb
Enter a weight between 0 and 1000. Finished (hydrated) fill weight of one block. 5 lb blocks are standard.
Water is also reported in litres for easy measuring.

Use a realistic value between 40% and 75%. Field capacity for Master’s Mix is roughly 55–65%.
%
Sawdust share should be between 10% and 90%. Classic Master’s Mix is 50/50. The remainder is soybean hulls.

Overview

The Master’s Mix is one of the most reliable fruiting substrates in gourmet mushroom cultivation — a balanced blend of hardwood sawdust and soybean hulls, hydrated to field capacity and sterilised in filter-patch bags. It produces strong, high-yielding flushes for wood-loving species such as lion’s mane, oyster, shiitake, and reishi.

The hard part isn’t the recipe — it’s scaling it. Guess the water and you get a soggy, contamination-prone block or a dry one that won’t colonise. This calculator turns a target block count, fill weight, and moisture level into an exact shopping-and-mixing list: how much dry sawdust, how much soybean hulls, and how much water to add, both per block and across the whole batch. It is built for hobby growers scaling up and small commercial farms standardising every run.

How it works

  1. Enter your block count. How many finished bags or blocks you want to fill.
  2. Set the wet weight per block. This is the hydrated fill weight; 5 lb (about 2.27 kg) is the industry-standard block size.
  3. Choose your unit. Pounds or kilograms — water is additionally shown in litres for easy measuring.
  4. Set target moisture content. Master’s Mix sits at field capacity, roughly 55–65%; 60% is a safe default.
  5. Adjust the sawdust share if needed. The classic recipe is a 50/50 dry split; the rest is soybean hulls.
  6. Press Calculate mix. You’ll get dry sawdust, dry soybean hulls, and water to add — per block and for the full batch — plus the water-to-dry ratio.

Formula explanation

Moisture content here is measured on a wet basis — water as a fraction of the total hydrated weight, which is how growers weigh a finished block. The maths is straightforward once the target moisture is fixed:

Total wet batch = blocks × wet weight per block
Water = total wet batch × (moisture% ÷ 100)
Total dry = total wet batch − water
Sawdust = total dry × (sawdust share% ÷ 100)
Soybean hulls = total dry − sawdust
Water : dry ratio = water ÷ total dry

Example: 10 blocks at 5 lb each is a 50 lb wet batch. At 60% moisture that’s 30 lb of water and 20 lb of dry material — 10 lb sawdust and 10 lb soybean hulls — a water-to-dry ratio of about 1.5 : 1.

Practical benefits

  • No more guesswork on water. The single biggest cause of failed or contaminated blocks is wrong hydration; this pins it to your target.
  • Buy the right amount once. Get exact dry sawdust and soybean hull totals so you don’t over- or under-order pellets.
  • Repeatable batches. Standardise every run so results are comparable and problems are easy to trace.
  • Scales with you. Whether it’s 5 blocks in a hobby tub or 500 on a farm, the per-block figures stay honest.
  • Flexible recipe. Adjust the sawdust share for supplemented or species-specific mixes without redoing the arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

It’s a fruiting substrate made from equal dry parts hardwood sawdust and soybean hulls, hydrated to field capacity and sterilised. The soybean hulls add nitrogen and structure, which boosts yields on wood-loving gourmet species compared with plain sawdust.
Because the finished, hydrated block is what you actually fill and weigh. Starting from your target wet weight and moisture level lets the tool work backward to the dry ingredients and water — the numbers you need at the bench.
Dry hardwood and soybean hull pellets usually hold about 8–10% inherent moisture as purchased, so treat the water figure as a starting point. Mix, let it absorb, then do a squeeze test: a firm handful should release only a few drops. Add small amounts of water if it’s still crumbly.
Yes. 50/50 is the proven default, but some growers lean toward more sawdust for slower, denser colonisation or more hulls for a nitrogen boost. Use the sawdust-share field to model any split; keep an eye on contamination risk as nutrition rises.
