Mushroom pH Level Calculator
Check whether your substrate or soak water is in the right pH range for your species, and get a practical starting dose of lime to bring it into range.
What this calculator does
pH quietly decides whether your grow succeeds. It controls how easily your chosen mushroom can access nutrients, and — just as importantly — whether competing moulds like Trichoderma get an easy foothold. Most edible and medicinal species have a fairly narrow window they prefer, and substrate or soak water often drifts outside it, especially when you are reusing materials or working with tap water.
This tool is built for home cultivators, market growers, and cultivation classes who want a fast, honest answer to two questions: is my pH in the right range for this species? and if not, roughly how much lime should I start with to fix it? It covers common species and lets you set a custom target for specialised jobs such as cold lime pasteurization.
Using the tool in four steps
- Pick your species (or choose “Custom target” to type an exact pH). This sets the ideal range the tool aims for.
- Choose what you're adjusting — a solid substrate/casing layer, or water for a soak or lime bath. This changes which amendment and dosing model is used.
- Enter your current measured pH from a calibrated meter or test strips, plus the amount of substrate (kg/lb) or water (L/gal) you're treating.
- Press Calculate. You'll get a status, the pH gap, and — if a raise is needed — an estimated starting dose of lime, with an application note. Press Reset to clear.
The math behind the estimate
pH is logarithmic and every material buffers differently, so no formula can give a perfectly exact dose. This calculator uses transparent, practice-based dosing rates to give a sensible starting point that you then confirm by re-testing.
gap = target pH − current pH
The target is the midpoint of the species' ideal range (or your custom value).
Step 2 — lime dose to raise pH
Substrate: dose (g) = 6 × dry weight (kg) × gap
Water (gentle): dose (g) = 0.6 × volume (L) × gap
Water (lime bath, target ≥ 11): dose (g) = 2 × volume (L)
The lime-bath rate is anchored in real chemistry: calcium hydroxide dissolves only to about 1.5 g per litre, and a saturated solution sits near pH 12.4 — so ~2 g/L reaches a strong alkaline bath with a small undissolved reserve. For substrate, we also suggest gypsum at 1% of dry weight (10 g/kg) as a pH buffer. When pH is too high, the tool gives guidance instead of a dose, because acidifying a grow substrate is material-specific and easy to overshoot.
Why growers use it
- Fewer failed blocks. Getting pH into range up front reduces green mould and stalled colonisation — the two most common reasons a batch is lost.
- Less guesswork with lime. A concrete starting dose beats “add a handful and hope,” so you waste less amendment and avoid wild over-liming.
- Repeatable recipes. Log the weight, gap, and dose and you can reproduce a good result batch after batch.
- Species-aware. Shiitake likes it acidic, button mushrooms like it alkaline — the tool bakes those differences in so you don't have to memorise them.
